Only four hospitals out of 55 evaluated in South Carolina, none of them in the Midlands, earned five-star ratings for patient satisfaction in the first such ratings released by the federal government Thursday.
The four with the highest ratings in South Carolina were Abbeville Area Medical Center, Patewood Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Greer Memorial Hospital and Mount Pleasant Hospital.
In the Midlands, Palmetto Health Richland and Providence in Columbia and Newberry County Memorial got four stars; Lexington Medical Center, Palmetto Health Baptist, Kershaw Health in Camden, The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties and Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter got three stars.
The lowest ratings in the state were two stars, which seven hospitals received.
The ratings are a new component of Medicare’s Hospital Compare website. They are based on customer surveys ranking several categories of care. Throughout the country, small or medium-size hospitals were most likely to earn five stars.
